Our Purpose

Wimborne Community Theatre creates original site-specific performances, set in unusual outdoor venues or non-theatre buildings, which bring to light stories about people and places.

We work in partnership with artists and arts or heritage organisations to develop and perform stories inspired by local places and the lives of inhabitants, past and present, real and fictional.

To Support Community Involvement:

  • The group exists to develop individuals’ creativity and sense of community through theatre, which explores the locality and history of the area in which members live.
  • The audience becomes a partner in a shared experience, celebrating a sense of heritage and community.

To Increase Skills and Creativity:

  • Evaluation indicates that members feel empowered to express themselves in a way which is outside their everyday experiences.
  • By employing professional practitioners, members’ own creative skills are developed and artistic standards improved.
  • Members grow in confidence and self-esteem, and understanding of inclusivity and environmental issues is raised.

To Extend Access and Participation:

  • The group is open to all; performances and rehearsals are held in accessible venues.
  • New members are welcome to join at any time.  WCT is a project based group, but runs occasional workshops and social/fundraising events between projects.

The aim of this website is to capture Wimborne Community Theatre’s cultural heritage, and  share it with the individuals and communities that created it and with anyone interested in how community theatre engages audience and performers with an awareness of ‘the spirit of place’ and the sense of histories played out in a landscape.
