Home, Sweet Home? • The Minster Green, Wimborne Town Centre (2025)
On Saturday 18th October 2025, to coincide with the ending of Planet Wimborne’s
Green Festival, Wimborne Community Theatre, with members of Jubilate Choir, presented an afternoon of theatre, songs and community conversations on Wimborne’s Minster Green.
The public were invited to share their own stories about home and to bring a special object which held memories of HOME for them. They marked where they lived on a map of the local area and reflected on the question “What does HOME mean to you?”
Wimborne Community Theatre performed a short piece, repeated three times during the afternoon, which showed how we are developing our play on the theme of HOME.
We shared our own special objects with the audience and reflected on nostalgia and a sense of belonging contrasted with the experience of those who are homeless with no warm memories to draw on.
About the production
On the Minster Green, a group of people gather round the war memorial on which various objects are laid – a dolls’ house in the centre. In the corner there is a rough-looking tent, incongruous in the setting. The play starts with a song, Home, Sweet Home, and a young person wanders around appearing lost. A mysterious figure addresses them in verse, reflecting that:
The Wanderer, like a kite blown by the wind,
goes around the world
looking for a place to call home,
a place where they feel accepted,
where they belong.
Then one by one members of the group come forward to talk about their chosen object. First it is the dolls’ house and then a picture depicting a happy family. Suddenly the young person angrily reminds everyone that life is not always so rosy and many have experienced hardship and homelessness. The rest of the group tell their own stories which gradually trigger happier memories for the Wanderer.

Home, Sweet Home
Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam,
Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home.
A charm from the skies seems to hallow us there,
Which sought through the world, is not met with elsewhere.
Chorus:
Home, home, sweet, sweet home,
There’s no place like home,
There’s no place like home.
An exile from home, splendour dazzles in vain;
Oh, give me my lowly thatched cottage again.
The birds singing gaily, come at my call,
And give me the peace of mind, dearer that all.
Chorus:
Home, home, sweet, sweet home,
There’s no place like home,
There’s no place like home.
Green, Green
Listen to part of the song Green Green sung by the cast.
Chorus:
Green, green, it’s green they say
On the far side of the hill
Green, green, I’m goin’ away
To where the grass is greener still.
Well, I told my mama on the day I was born
Don’tcha cry when you see I’m gone
You know, there ain’t no woman gonna settle me down
I just gotta be travellin’ on
A-Singin..
Chorus:
Green, green, it’s green they say
On the far side of the hill
Green, green, I’m goin’ away
To where the grass is greener still.
Nah, there ain’t nobody in this whole wide world
Gonna tell me how to spend my time
I’m just a good-lovin’ ramblin’ man
Say, buddy, can you spare me a dime?
Chorus:
Green, green, it’s green they say
On the far side of the hill
Green, green, I’m goin’ away
To where the grass is greener still.
Yeah, I don’t care when the sun goes down
Where I lay my weary head
Could be green green valley or rocky road
It’s there I’m gonna make my bed.
Chorus:
Green, green, it’s green they say
On the far side of the hill
Green, green, I’m goin’ away
To where the grass is greener still.
